Geological Core Testing and Analysis 

Through the British Ocean Sediment Core Research Facility (BOSCORF), we provide customers with high-quality geological core testing and scanning services. 

Our capabilities cover sediment, soil and coral samples, supported by specialist consultancy and interpretation. We offer both: 

  • Non-destructive testing, including unique high-resolution scanning and imaging capabilities 
  • Destructive testing, where detailed physical and geochemical analysis is required 

These services support applications such as environmental assessment, seabed characterisation, infrastructure design, academic research and commercial site investigation. 

Reservoir Characterisation and Rock Physics 

Our rock physics laboratory enables detailed testing of the hydromechanical behaviour of reservoir rocks under controlled conditions. 

Using advanced experimental and analytical tools, we assess how reservoir materials respond when exposed to different fluids - a critical capability for carbon capture and storage (CCS) and subsurface energy applications. 

Our services include: 

  • Measurement of elastic and hydromechanical properties 
  • Fluid-rock interaction testing 
  • High-resolution data analysis and interpretation 
  • Seismic forward modelling to assess subsurface response 

Supporting Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) 

We have used our specialist laboratory facilities to characterise rock samples from potential CCS sites, providing baseline data on how reservoirs may respond to CO₂ injection. 

This work has included: 

  • Testing of geological properties before and after CO₂ exposure 
  • Evaluation of changes in elasticity and hydromechanical behaviour 
  • Integration of laboratory results with seismic and reservoir models 

With this capability, we can physically characterise reservoirs prior to injection, supporting more robust modelling outputs by reducing uncertainty and supporting safer, more effective decision making.
